Emerge East

Rapidly developing neighbourhoods often struggle to foster a cohesive community identity or provide platforms for local talent. Emerge East was created to address this by transforming Barking Riverside into a vibrant, connected space through a free annual festival celebrating local creativity, community, and nature. I co-hosted the Barking Riverside Block Party stage with Robert Bruce from Capital Xtra, in collaboration with grassroots creative collective One Room. Using live event curation, stage design, and collaborative programming, we showcased local performers, emerging DJs, and community makers. Challenges around coordination, audience flow, and diverse programming were addressed through iterative planning and close collaboration with residents and cultural organisations.The festival attracted thousands of visitors, strengthened local creative networks, and fostered a shared sense of ownership in the neighbourhood. The experience also provided mentorship opportunities, allowing me to shadow Robert Bruce and Shayna Marie at Capital Xtra, expanding my expertise in music curation and live events. Emerge East continues to grow year on year, becoming a defining cultural highlight for Barking Riverside and demonstrating how immersive, community-led social design can transform placemaking and identity in urban developments.
