University fashion shows do more than put clothes on a runway. In an institution like Cambridge, they provide vital cultural spaces where identity, representation and creativity can be reimagined, countering the exclusivity that often shapes both elite academic environments and the wider fashion industry. The Cambridge University Charity Fashion Show (CUCFS) exists to raise money for social causes while giving emerging designers, models and creatives an accessible platform to develop their craft and gain visibility. My journey with CUCFS began the year before, when I modelled in the show and spoke with the previous Fashion Director, uncovering untapped creative potential behind the scenes. Initially appointed Fashion Director for the University of Cambridges 10th Anniversary Charity Fashion Show, I led the creative vision, sourced designers, coordinated stakeholders and managed timelines to ensure a seamless production. Midway through the planning, the committee merged the Fashion and Music Director roles, creating the position of Artistic Director, which aligned with my strengths. In this expanded role, I oversaw fashion curation, designer partnerships, music direction, runway movement and choreography, and the overall creative identity of the show. Though I ultimately stepped away due to management challenges, I had already led key creative and strategic work that shaped the event.CUCFS 2025, hosted at the Cambridge Union on March 14, attracted over 400 attendees and raised £51,759 in total revenue, with £32,730.72 donated to charity. Our fundraising supported Sew Positive, BEAT, Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination, Pink Week, and Nepacs, providing vital services ranging from mental health support to arts and youth programmes. Working closely with a proactive fundraising team, we scaled the production, experimented with immersive experiences and integrated music, choreography, styling, set design and casting into a cohesive, narrative-driven show. The theme, Beyond the Cover, encouraged audiences to look beneath surface impressions, engaging with the identities shaping each designers work.Representation was central to our approach. Designers hailed from Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin, Durham and Vietnam, blending graduate collections, newly curated pieces and international work to showcase multiple identities, cultures and creative voices. Pre-show experimentation, iterative design, live illustration by James the Scribe, spoken-word performances, panels and workshops co-facilitated by students created an inclusive, reflective environment that elevated student contributions and broadened audience engagement. The relaunch culminated in a sold-out event, record society membership, and glowing feedback from attendees, solidifying CUCFS as one of Cambridges most ambitious and culturally significant student-led creative platforms.
